About Melanie

Picture
Melanie grew up in Manteca and is a proud product of Manteca public schools.  She has dedicated her career to public education as an educator, school leader, statewide policy maker and now as a parent and community member.

Educator: Teaching students how to read is one of Melanie’s proudest accomplishments. She knows that literacy and numeracy, alongside critical thinking and problem solving, are the most essential skills a child needs to thrive.  As a new teacher coach she learned how important it is to support teachers so that they can build upon each student’s strengths and design supports that meet their needs.

School Leader: After teaching Melanie earned her Master’s degree in Public Policy from UC Berkeley and then became a principal.  As a TK-8 school leader Melanie worked tirelessly to create student programs and teacher support based on teacher and student needs.  She continuously evaluated the effectiveness of programs and always celebrated success and progress.  Under her leadership her school began a Dual Language program and always had a balanced budget.

Policy Maker: Melanie joined the California Department of Education to build upon her first hand experience with students, educators and families, and use her experience and training to inform statewide policies. Working as the Director of Improvement and Accountability, Melanie built strong partnerships across state agencies.  She ensured policies and programs were informed by stakeholder feedback and research.  She designed California’s new system of support, which prioritizes the local control of each school district and focuses on getting resources and just-in-time support to schools and districts.

Community Member:  Melanie moved back to Manteca after getting married. Once she and her husband had their son she joined the San Joaquin County Office of Education.  As the current Director of Continuous Improvement and Support, she works with districts and schools across San Joaquin County to design and facilitate professional learning aligned to their priorities and student needs.  She is also chair of the California Practitioners Advisory Group, which provides input on educational issues to the State Board of Education.

Melanie is running for school board to serve the community that raised her.  With deep roots in Manteca, Melanie will use her experience in education to champion students and educators so that they have the tools and resources to create schools where every student succeeds.
